Local Area Connection: What It Is

Local area connection, commonly known by the name of local area network or LAN, is a computer network that interconnects computers in a restricted area such as home, office, school, computer laboratory etc. generally, computers running widows are connected to a local area network. Your network adapter is detected, when you install windows, and local area connection is created. This connection also appears in the local area connection folder like other network connections. This local connection is always activated and is the only type of internet connection that is automatically created and activated. If your computer has more than one network adapter, a local connection symbol is displayed for each adapter in the network connection folder.

If you disconnect your computer local area connection, the connection is no more automatically activated. This is for the reason that your hardware profile remembers this and it accommodates location based needs as a cell phone user. For instance, if you travel to a remote sales office and use an individual hardware profile for that location that does not enable your local area connection, you do no waste your precious time waiting for your network adapter to time out. The adapter does not even seek to connect. There are various examples of local connections, including token ring, DSL, IP, wireless, ATM emulated LANs etc. Emulated LANs are based on adapter drivers such as the LAN emulation protocol.
